Becoming a Notary Public in your state is easier than you think. Before I give you the 411 about becoming a notary, let's discuss what a Notary Public is and exactly what a Notary public does.


What is a Notary Public?


A Notary Public is a public official appointed by the state to serve their community as trusted, impartial witnesses to document signings. Notaries perform notarial acts on behalf of their state are bound by the laws of that state. A Notaries jurisdiction is strictly limited to the boundaries of the appointing state and term of commission which could last anywhere from 2 to 10 years.


What does a Notary Public do?


A Notary Public really only has a few main duties. The first and probably the most important duty is to verify t


he identity of the signer(s) who appear before them and witness the signer(s) signing legally binding documents. Each state has its own list of documents that can be examined by the Notary to determine the identity of the signer.


The Notary will also administer oaths and affirmations, if required by the document. An Oath is a solemn statement or promise that is worded as a pledge to God or a higher power and an affirmation is basically a pledge on the person's personal honor (Notaries.com,2022).


Notaries may also have to evaluate the state of mind of the signer(s) to be sure they understand what they are signing and are not being pressured or intimidated and lastly Notaries, identify any fraud or coercion.


What are the qualifications to become a Notary?


To become a Notary, you must be 18 years of age, a legal resident of the U.S. You cannot have a felony conviction (unless your rights have been restored) and you must be a resident or employed in the state.


How do I become a Notary?


To become a Notary, all you have to do is hop online and head on over to the Secretary of State website for your state. I suggest to just type in the search bar Secretary of State and the name of your state. In the search bar, type in notary and the Notary information for your state should appear on the screen.
