When requesting an appointment to have a document notarized. It is important that the person requesting the notarization has the appropriate identification. After all, the single most important task of the notary is to be certain of the identity of the person whose signature will be notarized.
Verification of Identity for notarization.
In order to lawfully identify the signer, the notary MUST see one of nine official documents. These documents must be unexpired and are as follows:
A United States Passport
A United States Passport Card
A certificate of United States citizenship
A certificate of naturalization
A foreign passport
A United States green card with photograph
A state issued driver's license
State-issued identification card
A United States military identification card
